Consistent with O. Reg. 671/92 of the French Language Services Act, test ordering and instructions on this page is only available in English because it is scientific or technical in nature and is for use only by qualified health care providers and not by members of the public.

This supply pack is sufficient for three parasitology ova and microscopy tests on a single patient. Since parasite number fluctuate, it is recommended that more than one sample be collected on alternate days. The kit contains containing three SAF vials, three sterile vials and three General Test Requisition

NOTE: the liquid in the SAF vial is poisonous and should not be ingested

Instructions:

  1. The patient should not take any medication (laxatives, anti-diarrheal Drugs) containing mineral oil, barium, bismuth, magnesium, kaolin, antibiotics, etc., for at least five days prior to sample collection, if possible. These types of medication will affect the test results.
  2. Collect faeces in a dry, clean container (e.g. Chamber pot, wide-mouth jar, pie plate, on newspaper, saran wrap on toilet seat). Do not mix with urine or water from toilet bowl as this will affect the results.
  3. Uncap one each of SAF and sterile vial.
  4. Wait to collect a sample immediately after a bowel movement.
  5. For collection in the SAF vial:
    1. Use the plastic spork attached to the lid to add a quantity of faeces from the beginning middle and end of the sample as different parasites may be found in different parts of the sample
    2. Add the sample to the bottle so that the fluid reaches the top of the label.
    3. The fluid level after addition of the sample should be approximately ¾ full of fluid. If the fluid level is low or bottle is empty, use a new bottle with proper level of fluid inside.
    4. Mix faeces thoroughly with the fluid using the spork as this will help preserve parasites if present.
    5. Screw lid tightly on bottle so leakage will not occur. Shake well.
    6. Keep the specimen in the yellow vial at room temperature until transport to the laboratory
  6. For collection in the sterile vial:
    1. From the same stool specimen taken on that day, take a portion and put it in a sterile white capped container.
    2. Keep the specimen refrigerated until transport to the laboratory
  7. Label the specimen container with the patient’s full name, date of collection and one other unique identifier such as the patient’s date of birth or Health Card Number. Failure to provide this information may result in rejection or testing delay.
  8. Complete all fields of the requisition: include, the patient’s full name, date of birth, Health Card Number (must match the specimen label), enter ‘Parasitology’ and/or the suspected parasitic agent(s) under test description, source of specimen, date of onset, date of collection, physician name and address, clinical diagnosis, symptoms, travel, initial or repeat examination, anti-parasitic drugs taken and when.
  9. Repeat steps 1-8 for the collection of the next specimens on alternate days.
  10. Place specimen vials in the biohazard bag and seal bag.
  11. Insert the completed requisition in the pocket on the outside of the sealed biohazard bag.
  12. Transport the collected specimens to the laboratory within 72 hours. If unable to transport the same day, keep the specimen in the yellow vial at room temperature and the specimen in the white vial refrigerated or frozen.
  13. For further information about Parasite-Feaces specimen collection and testing refer to the Test Directory Index.
