Rubella and Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS)
(German Measles)
Rubella is a viral disease that is spread through respiratory droplets during coughs and sneezes from an infected person. Women who acquire rubella during pregnancy can transmit the virus to their fetus, causing miscarriage, stillbirth or birth defects (congenital rubella syndrome). Endemic rubella disease has been eliminated in the Americas; however, imported cases can occur. Children in Ontario receive rubella-containing vaccines prior to starting school to prevent the disease.
